Mathematics

The Post-Graduate Department of Mathematics is the pride of the college. It has produced some of the best students of Mathematics who are earning name and fame for themselves and the college. The Department was established in 1918 for intermediate classes under the headship of Prof. Kishan Chand. In 1929, the degree classes were started when Prof. Bansi Lal took the charge  as  Head of  the Department. Later on in 1930, Honors classes were started. Of the very first batch that appeared in Honor Exams in 1932, Sh. F. C. Auluck stood first in the university. He later did D.Sc. and retired as Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, Delhi University. Since then, the Department has built up a glorious record in respect of results in the university exams. A course in M. Sc. in Mathematics was started in 1948 and in the very first year, the first position in the university was secured by our student Shri Roshan Lal Mahindru. Subsequently in recognition of glorious results and distinctions of the department, the Guru Nanak Dev University allotted the second unit of sixty students of M.Sc. (Mathematics) in 2003-2004.

Prof. Kishan Chand, Prof. Bansi Lal, Prof D. R. Jain, Prof. Kartar Singh, Prof. G.L. Setya, Prof. J.R. Jetlie, Prof. V.K. Kohli, Prof. M.L. Aggarwal, Prof. N.K. Dass, Prof. T.R. Nagpal, Prof. Romesh Kumar, Prof. B.B. Nayyar, and Prof. Ajay Kumar Aggarwal contributed greatly as distinguished teachers and Heads to establish the glorious traditions of the Department.  Dr. Shiv Kumar Tuli is the present Head of the department.

• PG department of Mathematics celebrated National Mathematics Day on February 20, 2023 in the campus of DAV College, Jalandhar. The event was catalyzed and supported by NCSTC, DST (GoI) and PSCST, Chandigarh.

• DBT sponsored two day workshop  Learning by doing to commemorate International  PI DAY on 11^thand 12^th March , 2022.

• DBT sponsored workshop cum hands on training on Basics of C++ was conducted by the department on 27^th November, 2021. Dr. Nisha Chaurasia, Assistant Professor, Department of Information and Technology, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar was the eminent speaker.
• Dr. Rifakat Ali highlighted the Role of Cryptographic Techniques to Defend Modern Security Threats on 9^th Oct, 2021 in a DBT sponsored webinar.
• DBT sponsored one day webinar on Mathematical Modelling in Blood Flow via Stenosis Application in Heart by Dr. Ram Singh was organized to celebrate WORLD HEART DAY on 29^th Sept. 2021.
• Two days Faculty Development Program on Mathematica by Mr. Mahendra Singh, System Engineer, SCUBE Scientific Software Solutions (P) Ltd. on 17^th June, 2021 and by Dr. Rajni Sharma, Assistant Professor, DAVIET, Jalandhar on 18^th June, 2021.
• A DBT Sponsored virtual tour cum interaction session with successful start up founder Mr. Parteek Agarwal, Co- Founder and Director, Solar 91 Clear Tech Pvt. Ltd. was organized on 12^th June, 2021.
• Two day webinar was conducted in the department forCareer Opportunities in different fields after Graduation(with Mathematics). The Eminent speaker was Dr. Naresh Rakha (28^th Apr, 2021) and Dr. Khushboo Rakha (29^th Apr, 2021).
• Three Day Series of webinars was organized from 22^nd to 24^th Dec, 2020 to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan.
• A DBT Sponsored webinar on Solid Waste Management was organized on 3^rd Oct, 2020 to promote Swatch Bharat Abhiyan. Guest of Honor was Dr. Vibhuti Chhabra.
• National conference on Recent Trends and Innovations in Pure and Applied Mathematics (RTIPAM-2018) was organized on Feb 23-24, 2018.
• CSIR sponsored one day National seminar on “Recent Advances in Computational Techniques” (RACT- 2017) was organized on March 22,2017.
• International conference on Modeling, Simulation and Optimizing Techniques (ICMSOT-2015) was organized on Feb 12-14, 2015.
• Teacher Enrichment Workshop (TEW) 2014 on Rings and Modules sponsored by National Centre of Mathematics (NCM) was organized on 15-21 April, 2014.
• UGC sponsored national conference was organized on topic “Recent Trends in Discrete & Fuzzy Mathematics” on February 2-4, 2013.
• UGC sponsored national conference was organized on topic “Emerging Trends in Mathematics and its Application” on February 4-6,2012.
• UGC sponsored national conference was organized on topic “Recent Trends in Algebra and Analysis” on February 4-6, 2011.

• DBT sponsored extension lecture on Science , Technology and Industrial Revolution to commemorate the Nobel Laureate Dr. C.V.Raman was conducted by the department on 4th & 5th March, 2022. Dr. Rakesh K Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Industrial and Production Engineering, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar was the eminent speaker.
• Extension lecture by Dr. Santosh Kumar Yadav, Chancellor and Director (Academic and Research), JJT University, Rajasthan was organized on 5th Oct, 2019.
• Motivational cum Interaction session was organized in the department by Prof. Ajay Kumar Aggarwal on 16th Sept, 2019.
• DBT sponsored extension lecture by Dr. Madan Lal Ghai on ‘Importance of learning’ was conducted in the department on 3rd Sept, 2019.
• Dr. Sushma Chawla, President, Northern chapter, NARCHI, delivered a lecture on Health Awareness on 11th Jan., 2017.
• Dr. Rajni Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Applied Sciences, DAVIET, Jalandhar, delivered a talk on Iterative methods on 11th Jan., 2017.
• Prof. M.R. Adhikari, University of Calcutta, delivered extension lecture on ‘Fundamental Group and its Applications’ on 25th Feb. 2014.

The Department has a glorious record of achievements in academics which speaks volume of its committed and talented faculty. The department has bagged  29 Gold Medals till date.
