National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS was launched in Gandhiji’s Birth Centenary Year 1969, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India. DAV College has been committed to this cause as since 1971, four units of NSS, each consist of 100 volunteers have been working.

The Motto of NSS is- “Not Me But You”. It reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service.

Aims and Objectives

The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are :

  • Understand the community in which they work
  • Understand themselves in relation to their community
  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • Utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  • Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  • Gain skills in mobilising community participation
  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  • Practise national integration and social harmony

Joining NSS

The volunteers are enrolled on the basis of FIRST COME FIRST SERVED basis. They are led by Teacher Incharge called Programme Officer.  So far 52 programme officers have rendered their services in this department. The present Programme Officers are

Students are required to put in 120 hours of work per year including a seven day special N.S.S. Camp. Duration of this camp is minimum 2 years. After completing the service of two years volunteers get the university certificate.

Approach: N.S.S. attempts to establish meaningful linkages between:

  •   Campus and community
  •   College and villages
  •   Knowledge and action

Present Thrust Area: Present Thrust area is “Healthy mind, Healthy Youth and Healthy India”.

Activities

  • On April 14, 2023, 132th Birth Anniversary of Bhim Rao Ambedkar Ji was celebrated by NSS Unit and Red Ribbon Club of DAV College Jalandhar.
  • On May 05, 2023 under the “Mission Life Program” the tree plantation campaign was started at DAV College Jalandhar by Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar by planting saplings.
  • On May 31, 2023 NSS unit and Red Ribbon Club celebrated “No Tobacco Day” at DAV College Jalandhar. A poster making competition was conducted and prizes were awarded to the winning volunteers.
  • “World Environment Day” was celebrated by NSS and Red Ribbon Club on June 06, 2023. College Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar was the chief guest on this occasion. He shared his views on environment. Volunteers made this day memorable by planting a large number of saplings.
  • On June 13, 2023 ‘World Blood Donor Day’ was celebrated with the joint efforts of NSS, Red Ribbon Club and NCC of DAV College Jalandhar. On this occasion, a large-scale blood donation camp was organized in which the Civil Hospital team reached with its medical arrangements. Meanwhile, volunteers, cadets, college teachers and employees donated blood.
