National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS was launched in Gandhiji’s Birth Centenary Year 1969, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India. DAV College has been committed to this cause as since 1971, four units of NSS, each consist of 100 volunteers have been working.

The Motto of NSS is- “Not Me But You”. It reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service.

Aims and Objectives

  • The Department has an exciting roaster of teachers who are updated, skilled, result oriented, dedicated and are easily accessible.
  • The Department has built up a glorious record in the matter of results in the University examinations.
  • The overall development of the students has been the prime motive of Economics Department which is achieved through classroom teaching and other activities organized by two very active ad progressive societies— The Kautalya Society of Economics and The Ambedkar Planning Forum. These societies organize extension lectures, educational tours and cultural programmes every year. Eminent scholars in the field of economics are invited every year for the intellectual growth of under graduate and post graduate students.
  • The Department is equipped with computer and internet facility. Teaching through power point presentation and seminar is regular feature. The atmosphere of the Department is cordial and friendly where students receive encouragement and support from teachers and classmates.
  • The students are motived to avail employment opportunities in banking and insurance sector and are encouraged for Indian Economic Services beside teaching profession.

Joining NSS

The volunteers are enrolled on the basis of FIRST COME FIRST SERVED basis. They are led by Teacher Incharge called Programme Officer.  So far 52 programme officers have rendered their services in this department. The present Programme Officers are

Students are required to put in 120 hours of work per year including a seven day special N.S.S. Camp. Duration of this camp is minimum 2 years. After completing the service of two years volunteers get the university certificate.

Approach: N.S.S. attempts to establish meaningful linkages between:

  •   College and villages
  •   Knowledge and action

Present Thrust Area: Present Thrust area is “Healthy mind, Healthy Youth and Healthy India”.

Activities

  • Seven Day N. S. S. Camp: A seven days N. S. S. Camp was held at D.A.V. College Campus from December 22 to December 28, 2012. It was under the dynamic leadership of Principal Dr. B. B. Sharma along with  N.S.S. Co-ordinator Prof. S. K. Midha, Prof. Rajan Sharma, Prof. Deepak Wadhawan and Prof. Ritu Talwar. It was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Col. Manmohan Singh, Ex- Director Sainik welfare Centre, who was accompanied by special guest Commandant P. K. Mohla. During the camp almost all the trees were treated against white ants. The flower beds and the flower pots were painted by the girl volunteers. The garbage and the piles of concrete lying on the G. T. Road were cleared. These things usually pose a threat to the life of the people on the roads in the shape of accidents. About 50 plants were planted at the suitable places. There were five intellectual sessions held in the camp. Issues like background of N.S.S., spirit of service, adventure of activity, prevention of drug addiction, awareness of fatal diseases, status of women in society, student discipline, our responsibility towards environment were discussed. Many students asked questions to the speakers like Prof. Ashwani Kumar, Prof. A.K. Trivedi and Dr. Bhola. 80 volunteers who participated in this camp expressed their personality and talent in cultural programme activities. In the evening, volunteers enjoyed recreation games as well. In the concluding function of the camp the Chief Guest Sh Sunil Jyoti, Mayor MC Jalandhar praised the social work done by the volunteers. On this occasion Mr. Ranjodh Singh was awarded as a All Round Best Volunteer. Prinicipal Dr. B.B. Sharma expressed his great delight by praising the N.S.S. volunteers for providing a new look to the college campus and G.T. Road. Camp Commandant Prof. S. K. Midha read out the camp report and expressed his great gratitude to the volunteers and to all others who were directly or indirectly attached to this camp.
  • Global Police Visitor Week: on December 8, 2012, NSS volunteers  attended the “Global  Police Visitor week”  to know the New Police Services.
  • Blood Donation Camp: On November 9, 2012, Blood Donation Camp was organised and 78 units of blood donated.
  • Blood Donation Camp: On August 28, 2012, Blood Donation Camp was organised and 232 units of blood donated.
  • Painting and Slogan Competition: On August 24, 2012,Painting and Slogan Competition was organised on “My Earth My Duty” and NSS volunteers actively participated in it.
  • Sadbhawana Divas Celebrated: On August 17, 2012,Sadbhawana Divas was celebrated with active participation of NSS Volunteers. .
  • Tree Plantation Camp:  On July 29, 2012,  Tree Plantation Camp was organised in the College Campus. In which 92 Volunteers participated and 100 plants were planted.
  • Workshop on First-AID: On July 28, 2012, Workshop on First-AID Training was organised in which 80 volunteers participated. S. Amarjit Singh Hamral, was the resource person.
  • Blood Donation Camp: On February 15, 2012, Blood Donation Camp was organised and 132 units of blood donated.
  • Educational Tour: N.S.S Department organised a one day Educational Tour on February 11, 2012, to Holy Shrine Naina Devi and Shree Anandpur Sahib.
  • National Voter Day:On 24 January 2012,  N.S.S. Department celebrated  a National Voter Day. A Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competition were conducted on Ethical voting.
  • Seven Day N. S. S. Camp:N.S.S. Department organised a seven day N.S.S. Camp from January 2 to 8,  2012 at College Campus. Dr. B.B. Sharma, Principal, inaugurated the camp. During the camp volunteers did a commendable service i.e. cleaning of the campus, white wash, painting of grills in front of the Admn. Block. Beside this the resource persons Prof. D.K.Mand, Dr. H.S.Lama(PIMS), S. Inderjit Singh, Commissioner Labour Dept. Prof. Anoop Kumar, Prof. Arun Mehra, Prof. Sanjeev Sharma visited the camp to hold  brain storming session. During Intellectual session they delivered lectures on different topics to aware the volunteers e.g. literature & personality development, drugs addiction, Aids awareness, blood donation, child labour, public speaking and role of N.S.S. etc. In evening sessions volunteers enjoyed the recreation games and sports. In order to develop stage confidence among the volunteers. They were given chance to come on stage in the daily cultural programme. Prof.(Ms.) Gagandeep Kaur (Dept. of Computer Science) and Prof.(Ms.) Gagandeep  Kaur (Dept. of Philosophy) assisted the Programme Officer Prof. S.K. Midha, Prof. Rajan Sharma, Prof. Deepak Wadhawan, Prof.(Ms.) Ritu Talwar.
