Economics

The Post-Graduate Department of Economics was established in 1918 and in the beginning the subject was taught at intermediate level. Prof. R L Bhatia, a graduate from London School of Economics was the founder Head of the department. Economics at graduate level was introduced in 1929 and at Post-graduation level in 1948 under the leadership of Prof. R N Chopra. Later, B.Sc. (Economics) was introduced by Department in order to build up strong foundation at graduate level.Also, the department re-introduced BA (Hons.) in the session 2015-16 under the leadership of Dr. Suresh Kumar Khurana.

The department is presently running under the headship of Dr. Suresh Kumar Khurana, who is also the founder Editor of the bi-annual Research Journal –“The Economic World – A Research Journal of Economics and Business”, being published by the department. The department is also maintaining the News Panorama daily for updating the knowledge of the students. The Knowledge Review Magazine ranked PG Department of Economics, DAV College Jalandhar, in the top 10 best institutes’ for Economics Studies in India.

  • The overall development of the students has been the prime motive of Economics Department which is achieved through classroom teaching and other activities organized by two very active ad progressive societies— The Kautalya Society of Economics and The Ambedkar Planning Forum. These societies organize extension lectures, educational tours and cultural programmes every year. Eminent scholars in the field of economics are invited every year for the intellectual growth of under graduate and post graduate students.
  • The Department is equipped with computer and internet facility. Teaching through power point presentation and seminar is regular feature. The atmosphere of the Department is cordial and friendly where students receive encouragement and support from teachers and classmates.
  • The students are motived to avail employment opportunities in banking and insurance sector and are encouraged for Indian Economic Services beside teaching profession.

Research Journal

The Economic World - A Research Journal of Economics and Business (Bi-Annual Referred Research Journal)

The Post-Graduate Department of Economics has the enviable distinction of being the only Department located in this part of the Northern India, publishing its own Bi-annual Referred Research Journal – The Economic World-A Research Journal of Economics and Business. It was founded by Dr. S K Khurana in 2014. Currently, it is being edited by Dr. S K Khurana, the founder editor and the head of the department, with the able assistance of other members of the department. This referred research journal is now recognized as one of the leading journals in India and has been assigned ISSN 2393-8145. Till date, Department had released six issues of the Journal. It is published bi-annually in the month of June and December.

  • Students of the PG Department of Economics  excelled in the DCDC sponsored National Seminar organized by the department of Commerce and Computer Science and Applications GTB Khalsa College for Women   Dasuya (Hoshiarpur). Muskan Takiar (M A Eco 4th Semester) and Ms. Saloni Kamboj (B. Sc. Eco 4th Semester) presented their research papers on the topic “Cryptocurrency”.
  • Kautilya Society of Economics under the aegis of PG Department of Economics, DAV College Jalandhar organized Ecomania-2023: the enthusiasm which was based on the theme of Innovative Business Ideas, Crypto-currency and Azadi ka Amrit Mahatosav and was divided into three Competitions Rangoli, Chart-making and Power Point Competition.
  • Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar declared the results of M A Economics Semester  I  on March 16, 2023. Students of DAV College Jalandhar showed an excellent performance in the semester examinations. Poorva and Bhawna Pahuja, students of M A Economics Semester  I  stood Third and fourth position in university.
  • Post-graduate Department of Economics, D.A.V. College, Jalandhar organised a one-day educational-cum-religious trip to Mata Jawala Mukhi and Mata Chintpurni on April 09, 2023. 
  • An induction Programme to make new students of fresh classes aware of the rules and regulations of the college was held on 20th September 2022. Students of classes BSc I (Eco) and MA I (Eco) participated.

  • To seek the blessings of Almighty, A ‘Havan Yagya’ was organized in the PG Department of Economics, DAV College Jalandhar for the academic session 2022-23 in coordination with the Department of Sanskrit on October 18, 2022.  
  • Kautilya Society of Economics, P G Department of Economics, DAV College Jalandhar in collaboration with Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) celebrated World Investment Week 2022 for teaching faculty of DAV College Jalandhar on October 18, 2022. SEBI empanelled trainer of India Mr. Nagesh Kumar addressed the participants and shared his knowledge related to the investment.
  • The best teaching of a college is identified by its academic achievements. DAV College has once again proved it with another significant achievement. On 5th November 2022, in the UGC-NET examination results, Ms. Mansi from PG Department of Economics secured 198 marks out of 300 and cleared the UGC-NET examination.
  • DAV Collegiate Sen. Sec. School, Jalandhar organized a guest lecture on topic ‘Careers in Economics’ on December 12, 2022 in the Seminar room number 42. Dr. Suresh Kumar Khurana, HOD, Department of Economics DAV College, Jalandhar was the speaker of the day.
  • News Panorama has been started by the Department of Economics on the eve of Teacher’s Day.
  • 48 students and 2 teachers of PG Department of Economics met Finance Minister of Punjab at DD Punjabi programme “Chat Show” on 03-09-2014.
  • Free IES Coaching Classes have been started in collaboration with Rahul Jain, MD, VK Global Publications Pvt. Ltd. as a tribute to T R Jain in the name of “A TR Jain Heritage Initiative” on 02-09-2014.
  • Fresher Party for MA-I & B.Sc.-I was organized on 23-08-2014.
  • Independence Day was celebrated by PG Department of Economics on 15-08-2014.
