DBT-Sponsored Extension Lecture and Paper Reading Competition held at DAV College Jalandhar
Jalandhar, August 23, 2025 – Under the visionary leadership of Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar and the able guidance of Head of Department Dr. P.K. Sharma, the Department of Mathematics, DAV College, Jalandhar, organized a Paper Reading Competition and an Extension Lecture under the DBT Star College Scheme, in collaboration with the Bansi Lal Mathematical Society (BLMS). The program aimed at nurturing academic engagement and strengthening scientific temper among students.
The event began with DAV Gaan and a floral welcome of the resource person Dr. Om Parkash (IIT Patna) and Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar. Dr. P.K. Sharma introduced the guest speaker and highlighted the department’s academic initiatives, while Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar warmly welcomed him and appreciated the department’s efforts in promoting mathematical learning.
A total of 21 students participated in the Paper Reading Competition on the theme “Women in STEM.” The session was judged by Dr. Om Parkash, Dr. Seema Sharma, and Dr. Ashu Bahl, who praised the participants for their insightful presentations on the contributions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The investiture ceremony of the BLMS Student Council (2025–26) was also held on this occasion, marking the formal installation of its office bearers.

1st Prize: Ankur (B.Sc. 5th Semester)
2nd Prize: Riddhi (B.Sc. 5th Semester) and Akshit (B.Sc. 3rd Semester)
3rd Prize: Sujal (M.Sc. 3rd Semester) and Arushi (BCA 1st Semester)
The highlight of the program was the Extension Lecture by Dr. Om Parkash on “Role of Mathematics in Digital World.” He emphasized how mathematics underpins cryptography, artificial intelligence, data science, and algorithmic structures that drive today’s digital revolution. He further illustrated real-world applications ranging from secure communications to big data analytics, making the lecture highly relatable. The engaging session captivated the interest of the audience, sparking curiosity and motivating students to explore the deeper connections between mathematics and technology.
Ms. Ranjita Guglani efficiently conducted the stage, while Mr. Monish Arora and Ms. Jasmeen Kaur looked after the overall arrangements. The program concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks by Mr. Sahil Nagpal, President BLMS, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, judges, participants, and organizing team.
