The Department of Zoology, DAV College Jalandhar, successfully hosted a National-Level Workshop on Drosophila melanogaster on March 18, 2025, sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The workshop provided hands-on training to 30 students from various institutions on using Drosophila as a model organism in biological research.
The event was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar, welcoming students from Central University of Himachal, DAV University, Doaba College, Lyallpur Khalsa College, and DAV College Jalandhar. Renowned Drosophila experiment trainer Dr. Punit Puri conducted the sessions, sharing expertise gained from Banaras Hindu University.
The workshop included practical sessions on various techniques, such as:
1. Identification of male and female Drosophila.
2. Food preparation for raising flies.
3. Nail polish print of eye of Drosophila.
4. Microdissection of Malpighian tubules and ovaries.
5. Extraction of DNA from fly and its PCR.
Teachers from multiple institutions praised the workshopโs organization and technical depth. Dr. Rajesh Kumar commended Dr. Punit Puri and his team, including Dr. Deepak Wadhawan (DBT Coordinator) and Prof. Pankaj Bagga (Organizing Secretary). The eventโs success was enhanced by DBTโs funding, enabling advanced lab setups with screens, MIPS, and projectors.
Dignitaries such as Prof. S.S. Randhawa, Prof. Sonika Dania, Dr. Seema Sharma, and Dr. Abhinay Thakur graced the occasion. Special thanks were extended to Capital Local Area Bank and Sh. Vishal Dhawan for sponsoring refreshments.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rishi Kumar, President of the Darwin Zoological Society, with students expressing high enthusiasm and demand for more such workshops in the future!
