Nature Camp at Ropar Wetlands commenced magnificently by DAV College Jalandhar
The Department of Botany and Eco-Club of DAV College Jalandhar in collaboration with PSCST, Chandigarh and MoEFCC, GoI organized a three-day Nature camp to Ropar Wetlands under the Environment Education Programme from March 20 to 22, 2025.
On the first day of the camp, the journey started from the DAV College Jalandhar to Ropar Wetlands. The inaugural session of the camp was held at the Interpretation Centre of Ropar Wildlife Sanctuary. All participants, faculty members from DAV College and staff members of the DFO office, Ropar pledged for the adoption of a healthy lifestyle for the environment (Mission LiFE). Dr. Komal Arora (HoD, Botany & Eco-Club Coordinator) welcomed all the guests and participants and provided a brief introduction about the programme, the objectives of organizing Nature Camps and the workshops planned during the event. The event was hosted by Dr. Shivani Verma (Assistant Professor, Botany). Afterwards, the reading material of the camp was released in the form of a booklet.
Mr. Manik Kapoor (Wildlife Conservation Society, Khanna) was the resource person of the workshop titled “Man-Wildlife Conflicts”. Mr. Kapoor discussed about the interaction between wild animals and humans, and the consequent negative impact on people, animals, resources, and habitats. He said that man-wildlife conflicts are the result of growing human populations overlapping with established wildlife territory, leading to competition for space and resources. Further, he focused on Human-Snake conflict which is the largest yet neglected man-animal conflict in India. He also provided information regarding various species of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes and also demonstrated the procedure and equipment used for ethical rescue of the snakes. Practical aspect of the workshop was conducted in forest area of the region where He interacted with students and addressed the queries of students. He appreciated the efforts of Botany Department in organizing a well-planned camp.
During the post-lunch session Mr. Kulraj Singh (DFO, Ropar) joined the crew and gave information about Punjab wetlands. He explained the significance of wetlands for supporting diverse flora & fauna and their protection strategies. Dr. Shivani Verma expressed gratitude to Mr. Singh for providing excellent administrative support in execution of the programme.
The day concluded with a feedback session by the participants. Group leaders Tanishka, Muskan Arora, Pushpinder Kaur, Mohit Kumar and Dhruv Sharma expressed their views about the activities conducted during day 1 which participants cherished. Dr. Lovleen (Assistant Prof. Botany), Dr. Sapana Sharma (Assistant Prof. Botany) and Mr. Ram Dev (Mali) played an integral role in the successful conduction of the first day of the camp.
