The Punjabi Sahitya Sabha, DAV College, Jalandhar, organised a distinguished lecture on ‘Importance and Ethics of Punjabi Language’ on March 13, 2025. The event featured Sardul Singh Thiara, President, Punjabi Jagat Sabha, Toronto, Canada, as the keynote speaker. The occasion was graced by the esteemed presence of Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Senior Vice Principal Dr. S.K. Tuli and Vice Principal Prof. Kunwer Rajeev along with faculty members and distinguished guests from various departments. In recognition of their contributions, the guests were felicitated with commemorative plaques.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Sukhdev Singh Randhawa, Head, P. G. Department of Punjabi, who introduced the President of Jagat Punjabi Sabha, S. Sardul Singh Thiara and members, S. Kulwinder Singh Thiara (AIG), S. Baldev Singh Phul and Captain Tejinder Singh Sandhu. He highlighted the significant role played by Sardul Singh Thiara in promoting Punjabi language, literature and culture on a global platform. He emphasized that Mr. Thiara, having spent 53 years in Canada, has remained deeply connected to Punjabi linguistic and literary traditions, successfully organising World Punjabi Conferences dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Punjabi heritage.
In his address, Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar highlighted the intrinsic role of one’s mother tongue in shaping cultural and personal identity. He articulated that Punjabi accompanies individuals through all stages of life—from lullabies to funeral hymns—reinforcing the need to take pride in one’s linguistic heritage. Echoing these sentiments, Sardul Singh Thiara emphasised the necessity of first acquiring proficiency in one’s mother tongue, as it forms the foundation for learning other languages. He further elaborated on the ethical dimensions of life, advocating for dignity in manual labour, punctuality and the cultivation of both physical and mental well-being through active participation in sports.
Adding to the discourse, S. Kulwinder Singh (AIG) shared insights from his 40 years of service in the Police department, urging the younger generation to abstain from substance abuse and prioritise their health. The session was skillfully moderated by Dr. Sahib Singh. A significant highlight of the event was an interactive session, wherein students posed thought-provoking questions to the guest speaker. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Rajan Sharma, who expressed gratitude to the keynote speaker, esteemed guests, faculty members and students for their participation.
