Guest Lecture on “Role of Physics in the Medical Field” by Mr. Rajiv Dhawan
The Department of Physics, under the aegis of the Physics Association at DAV College, Jalandhar, organized a DBT-supported guest lecture on the “Role of Physics in the Medical Field,” delivered by Mr. Rajiv Dhawan, Associate Professor at G.M.C. Amritsar. The lecture aimed to inspire students and provide valuable insights into the significant contributions of physicists to the medical field.
Dr. Kunwer Rajeev, Vice Principal and Head of the Physics Department, introduced the esteemed guest to the audience and elaborated on the diverse career opportunities available in medical physics. He emphasized how students can pursue this dynamic and evolving field.
The session commenced with a warm welcome and encouraging words from the officiating Principal, Dr. S.K. Tuli, who highlighted the importance of such interactions for students’ academic and professional growth.
Mr. Dhawan’s lecture began with an engaging discussion on the history of radiodiagnostic techniques, starting with the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Roentgen. He showcased the first-ever X-ray image and delved into the physics behind this groundbreaking invention.
He further explained the principles and workings of various diagnostic tools, including CT scans, ultrasound, Doppler imaging, and PET scans, underlining their crucial role in medical diagnostics. Additionally, Mr. Dhawan provided a detailed overview of radiotherapy techniques such as teletherapy, radiotherapy, and brachytherapy, highlighting their applications in cancer treatment.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, including DBT Coordinator Dr. Sharanjit Sandhu, Dr. Navjeet Sharma, Dr. Renuka (Head, Department of Biotechnology), Dr. Reena, Dr. Rawinder Kaur, Dr. Preety, Dr. Sunil Thakur, Prof. Rahul Sekhri, Dr. Shivani, and Dr. Summit, the Professor In-Charge of the Physics Association.
