An educational visit to Fisheries Department, Kanjli near Ramsar Site, Kapurthala by Department of Zoology, DAV College, Jalandhar
An educational visit was organized under the aegis of Darwin Zoological society on 6th September, 2023 for UG and PG students of Department of Zoology, DAV College Jalandhar to Fisheries Department, Kanjli wetland near Ramsar Site, Kapurthala, as a part of their curriculum in Applied Biology. The purpose of this visit was to provide students with theoretical & practical experience. This trip was accompanied by Dr. Deepak Wadhawan, Dr. Abhinay Thakur (President, Darwin Zoological society) and Dr. Shubham Kapil along with 35 UG and PG students. The crop production of Rohu Fish, Catfish and Catla Fish is being offered by Fisheries Department to farmers from Kapurthala. Sh. Balwinder Singh Fisheries officer briefed about the objectives of the fish farm and highlighted the various steps involved in fish culture. He emphasized on important species of Indian major carps, their nutritive values and breeding methods in them. These fishes have peculiar habit of breeding in running waters of rivers and streams where they have large space for movement. He also explained about induced breeding and various steps involved in this process like collection of pituitary gland, extract formation and mode of injections in breeder. After then he explained spawning in breeding hapa. The students were knowledge upon various do and don’ts regarding induced breeding.
He also described the shortcomings of the capture fisheries sector and explained the breeding techniques used for the culture of the Indian major carps. The fisheries department housed facilities like breeding tanks, stocking tanks and various other equipments used in fish culture and breeding. After then the students had a fruitful interaction with Sh. Bikramjit Singh (Executive Fisheries Officer) and benefited from their expertise about the intricacies and the importance of care, prudence and patience in the fish industry. He also highlighted the cost evaluation and benefit assessment of fish farming in Punjab.
This visit was the part of course curriculum enlighting the knowledge of students in terms of applied field of Zoology. The students were thankful to Head of Department (Zoology) Prof. Punit Puri for encouraging the students for such outdoor excursion activities in department. The students also thanked Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar for his enthusiastic support to students.
