“NEVER TOO OLD TO DISCOVER THE WONDERS OF TECHNOLOGY.”

To commemorate World Telecommunication Day, the PG Department of Computer Science and Institution Innovation Council organised a 2-day skill enhancement program on “TECHNOLOGY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS & HOMEMAKERS”. The program envisioned giving hands-on training on online bill payment, net surfing, mobile app basics, and social media usage to the participants.
The workshop was conducted keeping in mind the growing digitization in every field and, thus, the need for every individual to stay abreast of the usage of computers and mobile phones. The aim of the workshop was to build a learning environment for senior citizens and homemakers in college that can be characterized by inclusiveness as one of its most integral attributes and make their everyday life easier.
On the inaugural day, Head of Department and Convener, Dr. Nischay Bahl, along with Prof. Monika Chopra (Co-convener), Prof. Ritika Sobti (President, IT FORUM) and staff members of the computer science department, gave a floral welcome to the Vice Principal, Prof. S.K. Uppal. Prof. S.K. Uppal addressed the participants and explained how technology is required in day-to-day activities. As per the schedule, the workshop was structured into two sessions: one for guest lectures and another for hands-on practice.
The first day of the workshop was dedicated to refreshing basic terminology related to net surfing and cyber awareness. The speaker, Dr. Nischay Bahl, discussed the avenues of technology, innovations, and best practices and also augmented their talk with hands-on practice. Ms. Ritika Sobti started the session by giving an overview of mobile apps and social network usage. She also gave a few suggestions on how to have regular locks on our posts and photos and taught how technology brings families closer to their seniors.
On the valedictory day, the topic of online bill payment was explained by Dr. Rajeev Puri. In the session, he welcomed the participants, and made them familiar with booking railway tickets from the IRCTC website and paying electricity bills online. The session concluded with positive feedback from all the participants.
Further, Head of Department and Convener, Dr. Nischay Bahl, along with Prof. Monika Chopra (Co-convener), Prof. Ritika Sobti (President, IT FORUM) and staff members of the computer science department, gave a floral welcome to the Principal, Dr. Rajesh Kumar. He mentioned that in this technical era, everyone must be well equipped with modern technologies. He made it clear that the basic objective is to empower seniors to embrace new technology. He appreciated the efforts of the Computer Science Department in organizing the workshop for the society. Finally, all the participants were awarded certificates.
All the participants enthusiastically worked on the assigned task throughout the workshop. They were very much involved in learning and trying out the features, and they got their doubts clarified. Prof. Monika Chopra, Prof. Vishal Sharma, Dr. Kawaljeet, Dr. Leekha Jindal, Dr. Rajeev Puri, Prof. Namarta Kapoor, Prof. Gagan Madaan, and other faculty and non-faculty members graced the occasion. Prof. Ritika Sobti presented the formal vote of thanks. The day came to an end with glistening smiles sparkling on the faces of participants and renewed enthusiasm. The workshop proved to be extremely fruitful for the attendees.
