DAV COLLEGE ORGANIZED ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON SUGAR PROCESS

Department of Botany, DAV college organized a one day workshop on “Sugarcane: an agrarian crop and sugar process” under the aegis of Kashyap Biological Society on 6 March 2017. Prof. Harkamaljit Singh, Retd. Associate Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology, GNDU, Amritsar and Mr. Jasbir Singh, Retd. General Manager, Fazilka Co-operative Sugar Mill, were Resource persons on this occassion.
Workshop began with registration and distribution of kits to participants from BSc. Sem II & VI (Medical). In the first session, program was inaugurated by garlanding resource persons by teaching and nonteaching faculty members of Department of Botany. Ms. Adeshwinder Kaur, Secretary, Kashyap Biological Society welcomed the guests through badge ceremony.
Ms. Swati Chawalia, stage co-ordinator introduced guests to Dept. of Botany. Dr. Komal Arora, Head, Dept. of Botany introduced participants to both resource persons. Prof. Harkamaljit Singh delivered first lecture of the technical session on “Sugarcane Biology and its Agrarian Status in Punjab”. He discussed about the sugarcane farming, process of sugar formation, sugarcane varieties and sugarcane as renewable source of energy. In continuation, another lecture was delivered by Mr. Jasbir Singh on “Sugar Industry”. He discussed about the present scenario of sugar production in India, its future aspects and role of sugar industry in economic growth of India. He also discussed the steps taken up by the government of India for the up gradation of sugar industries.
In second technical session, students visited Bhogpur Sugar Mill, which was earlier registered as “The Janta co-operative Sugar Mill ltd, Bhogpur” in 1954, but later its name was changed to “the Bhogpur Co-op Sugar Mill Ltd” in 1988. Mr. B. S Gill, General Manager of the sugar mill along with other officials interacted with students and staff members. They added that mill is old and outdated but still being handles by Old Monks in a Young way. Students experienced the whole process of sugar formation and observed how the by-products of sugarcane i.e. Bagasse and Molasses were produced and further used for electricity and alcohol production. Resource Persons and Dr. Komal Arora (Head of Botany Department) and Dr. Lovleen (Assistant professor) accompanied the students for this visit.
In the Valedictory Session, Prof. V. K Sareen, vice-principal, DAV College congratulated the faculty members and students for successful organization of the event. Resource persons were honoured with mementos and students were distributed certificates for attending workshop. In the end, Dr. Komal Arora extended a vote of thanks to guests, principal Dr. S.K. Arora, vice-principal Prof. V.K. Sareen, organizers and all participants. Those present on the occasion were Dr. Baljeet Kaur, Swati Chawalia, Mrs Minakshi Sharma (Assistant Professors), Sh. Ramdev, Sh. Sushil Kumar and Mrs. Neetu (Lab attendants) of Botany Department.
