Botany Department organized Educational Trip to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar

An educational trip to GNDU, Amritsar was organized by Department of Botany, DAV College on August 19, 2014 sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India under Star College Scheme. Students of BSc. III (Medical) were accompanied by Head of Botany Department, Dr. (Mrs.) Komal Arora and faculty member Mr. Rakesh Kumar. Students had an opportunity to see functioning of sophisticated analytical instruments at Emerging Life Sciences, Centralised facility generated by GNDU, Amritsar to bring all sophisticated research facilities under one roof. Prof. Palwinder Singh, Professor, Department of Chemistry, GNDU and other technicians at Emerging Life Sciences illustrated techniques and handling of HPLC, LC-MS, SEM and Confocal Microscopy.

            Afterwards, students and faculty members visited Botanical Garden at GNDU campus. They gathered knowledge about economical and medicinally important plants growing under an area of about 2 acres of Botanical Garden. They collected some rare plant species and fruits of medicinal importance such as Sapindus trifoliatus (Reetha), Koelreuteria, Bambusa vulgaris, Melia azedarach, Atropa belladonna (Ashwagandha), Abrus (Rati) etc. They also visited the site of Vermicomposting in Botanical Garden and gathered knowledge about this technique.

            Visit to Botanical Garden and Emerging Life Sciences was really an informative and motivating experience for students.
