Department of Botany, DAV College,Jalandhar, organized an extension lecture on Sustainable Development using Phyoremediation on Aug 31, 2013 under DBT Star College Scheme. The extension lecture was aimed to provide a platform for discussion and deliberation to develop projections on the topic Sustainable Development. The resource person on this occasion was Dr. Renu Bhardwaj, Professor, Department of Botany, GNDU, Amritsar. She is a known researcher with 125 publications and has organized 1 International and 12 National Conferences. She is co-ordinator of many UGC Programmes and member of 10 learned societies.
In the beginning, Dr. Komal Arora, Head of Botany Department and staff members extended floral welcome to honourable guest. Stage coordinator Ms. Kanika Dua gave a brief introduction of Botany Department and invited Prof. Bhardwaj to deliver her talk. She gave a good account of burning issue of environment protection and sustainable development. She emphasized the sequestration of hyper-accumulated metals in water bodies by using Phytoremediation. Plants such as Salvinia, Eichhornia, Brassica juncea, Pistia and many more are being employed these days for clearing polluted water. She also cited an example of Ayala Technologies (Israel) who are using this technique since 18 years and have successfully undertaken many projects.
The extension lecture concluded with a discussion about genetically engineered hyper-accumulator species and role of water hyacinth in natural wetland management. At the end, Prof. P.K. Kapoor, Vice Principal, Prof. Ravi Manuja, Dr. Jeevan Asha and Dr. Komal Arora Swami thanked resource person by presenting the college insignia. Dr. Komal Arora thanked organizers and students. Other faculty members of DAV College who were present on this occasion included Dr. Lakhbir Singh and Dr. Kamaljit (Punjabi Department).
