A one day workshop was organized by Department of Botany, DAV College, Jalandhar on March 2, 2013, under DBT Star College Scheme for Promotion of Basic Sciences. The workshop was aimed to provide a forum for serious scientific discussion and deliberation to develop projections on the topic of Plant Cell Division. More than 50 participants from DAV College, other schools and colleges in the town came together to discuss mechanism of cell division and errors incurred during this process. The resource person for the discussion was Prof. M.S. Sagoo of Department of Botany, Punjabi University, Patiala. The function started with the Lamp lighting ceremony seeking the blessings of Maa Saraswati. Stage coordinator Ms. Kanika Dua extended a warm welcome to dignitaries, faculty and all participants. She gave a brief introduction of DAV College to chief guest and participants. Head of Botany Department, Dr. Komal Arora gave an introduction of department and highlighted various activities organized during past years. Addressing the students, Principal Dr. B.B. Sharma said, "Organizing Workshops for inculcating the research temperament in our students is a commendable effort of Botany Department. He applauded the participation of teacher and student delegates from different institutions.” Faculty members of DAV College who were present at the workshop included vice principals Prof. P.K.Kapoor & Prof. P.K.Sharma, Prof. Renuka Chopra, Prof. Jeevan Asha, Prof Rajan, Dr. Rajiv Sharma and others.
The workshop was divided in two sessions. In first session Prof. Sagoo delivered his talk on “Genetics of Cell Division” which was further corroborated with his second lecture on "Errors in Cell Division". He gave a good account of detailed mechanism of cell division in plant cells and various aberrations related to this process. Delegates asked their queries from Prof. Sagoo in general discussion session.
Evening session started withthe practical demonstration about preparation of meiotic and mitotic slides by Prof. Sagoo. His research scholars Ms. Loveleen and Mrs. Navdeep Kaur, assisted him in lab techniques.Lastly, valedictory ceremony of workshop was held in which Prof. Sagoo and his scholars were honoured by college insignia and various delegates were presented with certificates of participation. At the end, Dr. Komal Arora Swami thanked resource person, all delegates and organizing faculty members of Botany Department – Ms. Rosy Mittu, Ms. Kanika Dua, Ms. Rajwinder Kaur, Ms. Jasdeep Kaur and members of non-teaching staff for making this event a grand success.
