DAV College, Jalandhar under the aegis of Department of Bio-technology organised International Seminar on “Molecular Biology” on 28 September. Professor Yung-Fu Chang, Professor of Molecular Microbiology & Director, Infectious Disease Research Programme, Dept. of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA was the Keynote Speaker on the occasion.

Principal, , HOD, Biotechnology and other members of Staff welcomed the Chief Guest. Principal formally welcomed the Chief Guest, dedicated this Seminar to 102nd Birth-Anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, who strongly advocated the vast spread of quality education and creation of new knowledges by the youth of India. He said the presence of such an internationally eminent Scientist would encourage the young students to accelerate in the field of science and research.

Prof. Y. Chang discussed the ultra modern Molecular approaches on the development of Johne’s Disease or Paratuberculosis Vaccine. Prof. Chang briefly introduced the audience with the global importance of Paratuberculosis and its zoonotic concerns. As the disease is important not only for economic concerns but also for human health concerns hence development of efficacious vaccine is the must requirement of today’s world in order to secure economic losses and to reduce human exposure to this deadly pathogen. First of all he discussed the use of recombinant Ag85 complex, SOD, 74F Poly Protein etc. as Vaccine candidate in goat and cattle system. The recumbinent antigens were able to significantly raise the immune system of animals and hence the protectivity. He laid the concept of cocktail antigens as potent vaccine candidates. Secondly he discussed the attenuated mutant strain of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratubnerculosis (MAP). The mutants used by were leuD deficient. These mutants were unable to cause disease but raise the immune system of animal significantly. Hence he laid stress on the use of these mutants as vaccine candidates. Finally he discussed the use of recombinant Salmonella typhimurium expressing MAP antigens as vaccine candidate. He emphasize that this approach can meet the cost constraints of the recombinant antigens. In conclusion he laid stress on the molecular vaccine to control disease.

He appreciated the entire infrastructure of DAV College, Jalandhar in general and Dept. of Biotechnology in particular. He also offered to involve Dept. of Biotechnology, DAV College, Jalandhar to carry out future vaccine research in collaboration. Team won 16th SAIL Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey Tournament

Posted by admin in Untagged

15.2.2009: 16th SAIL Nehru champion colleges hockey tournament came to an end at the Northern Railway Hockey Stadium in Gwalior, a city 250 kms south of Delhi, with defending champion DAV College, Jalandhar defeating the Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar by a whopping 7-1 score, on Saturday.

Lakhwinder Singh of DAV College, who was Man of the Match yesterday in the semis, again won the honour today, for his hattrick.

As the score board stands by, the proceedings were dull on the turf in contrast to the Friday proceedings. Both the semis played on Friday went down to the wire, the results settled through one-on-one tie-break.

Prof. Manu Sood, manager of the DAV College, was a happy man, as he wanted to teach the losing side a lesson. “They hosted the Inter-University in Haridwar, and we were virtually chased out of the competition due to rogue elements in their campus. Now we got a chance to prove our worth”, said otherwise reclusive Sood.

Haridwar team won the Interuniversity championship in January at home, defeating Punjabi University 4-2. It was a record Tenth Time for the DAV College team to walk away with the Nehru Champion Colleges Cup out 16 that has gone into the annals.

As was introduced in the previous two Premier Hockey Leagues, the one-on-one tie breaks won the hearts of the spectators. Three out of four quarterfinals and two semis, in all five out of six matches were decided by the new goalkpeer vs forwards duel. Gwalior crowd had sufficient of them.

Though it did not matter much for the teams, levying of Rs.50 for green cards, Rs.100 for yellow card and Rs.500 for red card -- this was done to bring better discipline on the turf – was keenly followed by the crowd.

Announcer Kamal Kishore often mentioned the stats of these penalties collected, much to the delight of the crowd. The collected amount, about Rs.4000, has not gone into the kitty of the organizers, Nehru Hockey Tournament Society, but was given to the team that did not get any card at all. Good gesture indeed.

Annamalai university team, that had apprehension in the beginning of the competition that the physical intimidation of some teams hampered their natural play, acknowledged in the latter stages that the umpiring qualities improved then on, and were delighted to win the bronze.

This hardline match was also one-sided affair as the Rourkela based Municipal College team caved in to a 1-5 defeat.

According to Kukoo Walia, the Organizing Secretary, the Madhya Pradesh Women Hockey Academy, extended good support towards successful conduct of the tournament. Local Member of Parliament and former Sports Minister of the State, Yasodaraje Scindia gave away the trophy to DAV College.
The Nehru Society organizes the Cup in Delhi, but had to look for alternative venue this time, as both the turfs in Delhi are under renovation.
Based on the performance of the teams here, All India University Union (AIU) has selected an 18-member team. “This team will participate in the World University Games”, Dr. Gurdeep Singh announced.

The concept of Man of the Match was introduced by the Nehru Society this time, an amount of Rs. 40,000 has thus directly gone into the hands of players.

He said that this conference is an effort to the introduction and the awareness of the Nano-technology and its possible impact on present and future technological and other challenges. He said, Such Conferences, also provide a platform for young inquisitive minds to interact, to brainstorm and to learn. It is also a platform to know and be known.

Key-note Address: Dr. C S Sundar, Head, Material Science Division, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam presented his key-note address. Speaking on the topics Nanomaterials Research - Opportunities & Challenges, he said that We are all riding a “Nano Wave” today, with enormous excitement and considerable expectations of applications in several domains. In his talk he traced, the rapid evolution of this nascent field, that is a confluence of several streams of activities in physics, chemistry, biology, Materials Science and Engineering. Research in nanomaterials is largely driven by applications, and hence is highly context dependent.

Dr. B C Ranu (Indian Association of Cultivation of Science, Kolkata presented his paper on Metal Nanoparticles as Efficient Catalysts. He said that the last decade has witnessed a tremendous growth in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The easy accessibility to nanoparticles has prompted investigations on their applications in catalysis. The recent reports showed amazing level of their performance as catalysts in terms of selectivity, reactivity and improved yields of products. He further said that an investigation to explore the potential of palladium and copper nanoparticles in organic reactions, particularly the functionalization of molecules.

Dr. L M Bhardwaj, CSIO, Chandigarh presented his paper on Bionano Materials & Devises. He said that the convergence of nanotechnology with information technology, modern biology and social sciences will reinvigorate discoveries and innovation in almost all sectors of the economy. Both science and the economy in the 21st century will require technological breakthroughs in the control of nanometer scale structure and functions, where the top-down approach of electronics manufacture converges with the bottom-up assembly of biology. At this moment, the scientific questions are being formulated, the required tools are being developed, and the possible applications of nanotechnologies could be revolutionary.

Nano-Biotechnology takes advantage of interfacing functional biomolecules with available devices for development of devices with higher performance in terms of selectivity, sensitivity and economics. The life processes and materials have been perfected by nature in billions of years. The nature has created large variety of molecular devices which are working in living system ranging from micro-organism to human beings. Nature creates these devices by self-assembly process and does not requires billions of dollar lithography based fabrication facilities used in VLSI devices.

Dr. A. K. Ganguli, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi presented his paper on Control of size and shape of nanostructures using the microemulsion method. He stressed that Nanoparticle synthesis is a challenging and interesting area of research especially for obtaining sensors and catalysts based on nanomaterials having useful properties (dielectric, magnetic, and optical).

Dr. R K Khandal, Shri Ram Institute of Industrial Research, New Delhi presented his paper on Nanoscience to Nanotechnolgoy: Scope, Challenges & Opportunities. He said that converting concepts of nanoscience into the know-how of nanotechnology has always been a challenging task, which everyone seems to be pre-occupied with, thanks to the opportunities that exist for such efforts. Inspite of the fact that the fundamental concepts behind nanoscience are quite well understood and appreciated, making nanomaterials based on these concepts have several hurdles to cross. The complexities involved in producing nanomaterials and desired products based on them are immense; to resolve them, one needs to apply interdisciplinary approaches involving multi-phase systems. The extraordinary properties exhibited by nanomaterials drive us to develop almost all devices based on nanomaterials, but this is easier said than done.

The first and foremost step in this process is to define the scope in terms of its degrees and dimensions. Then, the challenges involved at different stages of making the nanomaterials be identified and listed based on the technicalities involved. For each challenge, a path forward using the expertise and experience is determined to develop materials of desired quality. The process of development of nanomaterials, thus, be carried out in such a manner that the outcome is based on science and it is no longer considered as an art!

Similarly the other Scholars Dr. A Banerjee, Indian Association of Cultivation of Science, Kolkata presented his paper on Nanotechnology : A New horizon of Technology, Dr. Sanyog Jain, NIPER, Mohali, presented his paper on Novel Nanocolloidal Carrier Systems for Targeted Drug and Vaccine Delivery, and Dr. G S Chauhan, HPU Shimla traced the different aspects of Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology. Nearly 400 delegates from all parts of the country participated in the conference.
