DAV College Jalandhar , under the aegis of the PG Department of Mathematics, organised a 3-day UGC sponsored National Conference on “Emerging Trends in Mathematics and its Applications” on 4-6th February 2012. Dr. P.K. Sharma, Organising Secretary of the conference, gave the introduction about the conference. The conference was inaugurated by the chief guest, Prof. (Mrs.) Rajinder Jeet Hans-Gill , Punjab University Chandigarh. The guests were given a floral welcome by Principal (Dr.) B.B Sharma and Prof. B.B. Nayyar, HOD and Convenor of the conference.
The Principal (Dr.) B.B Sharma extended heartiest welcome to the Chief-Guest , Delegates , Resource Persons and participants , who had come from different parts of the country and informed them about the aim of the conference. He highlighted the achievements of the college and the future mission of the college.
The chief guest Prof. Rajinder Jeet Hans-Gill, in her address talked about the problems which have remained unsolved for a century and also about the highest award given by the International Mathematics Union (IMU) , i.e. the Field Medal. She gave an account of the Fermat’s Last Theorem and explain, how was this problems created and finally how it was solved. She also enlightened the gathering by giving up-to-date development in the field of Number theory.
The Key Note speaker of the conference was Prof. S.C. Arora , from Delhi University. He delivered his Key Note address on the topic “Slant Weighted Toeplitz Operators”. In this he discussed detail about “Operator Theory”. In particular, he explained the notion of Slant Weighted Toeplitz Operators and its importance in the field of analysis.
The first Plenary talk was given by Dr. B.P. Garg , director cum principal of GTB Khalsa Institute of Engineering and Technology, Malout, talked about “Some Mathematical Techniques in the Problems of Fluid Mechanics”. He beautifully explained the different mathematical techniques used for solving problems related to fluid mechanics which are very important in medical fields.
The next talk was given by Prof. D.K. Basnet , from Tejpur a university , Assam on the topic “Almost Nil Clean Rings” , He gave an outline of his topic and the latest development in the area of ring theory .
Further , a talk by Prof. Kancham Shyam Prasad , from Manipal university , Karnataka was on the topic “Finite Dimension in Modules and N-Groups” . He discussed how the notion of dimension of vector space over a field is carried over to dimension in modules over rings . He also illustrated his idea with examples. He then give some account of the notion of “ complement , essential ideal , uniform ideal, and finite Goldie dimension the theory of modules” He also extended the concept of dimension to N-ring , which are modules over a near ring. He then inter-connected his results on finite dimension with the applications to the graph theory and fuzzy set theory.
The next talk was given by Prof. Satish Verma , from Khalsa college, Delhi university , on the topic “Emerging trends in mathematics and its Application through mathematica” . He talked about the recent trends in the field of mathematics and their application with the help of the newly created software mathematica . He discussed his lecture by citing beautiful examples with the help of internet. All the participants listened to his lecture very patiently and were thrilled with the noble idea of using new facility available to them in the form of this software called mathematica.
The Plenary talk of Prof . J.N. Sharma , from NIT , Hamirpur , Himachal Pradesh , was also on the topic “Recent trends in mathematics and its application to Engineering and physical sciences”. He beautifully account for the different branches of mathematics and their application in engineeging and other sciences.
The next Plenary talk was given by Prof. B.S. Komal , from Jammu University , on the Topic “ Integral Operator “ . He discussed the various integral operators used in functional analysis and explained their importance there in .
In addition to these talks, the delegates attending the conference presented their papers on Mathematics and their emerging trends in other fields .
The Chief Guest of the valedictory function was Prof. B.B. Nayyar , Registrar cum Convener of the said conference He delivered a thought provoking lecture on modern day education in various fields and gave away certificates to the paper presenters.
