Page 1 of 2  Department of Geography These are exciting times for geographers. Just about every major issue facing society at present has a geographical dimension, from localised flooding to global flows of capital and from environmental degradation to inequable development. Geography is repositioning itself to meet these challenges, building upon its traditions as a broad, exacting and welcoming discipline that respects both process and place. As the historical geographer Felix Driver has recently emphasised, "Geography is a subject which has a reputation for being down to earth; its focus is on the real world, its landscapes and the way it is used".The Department of Geography is centrally located on the main campus. The Geography department offers specialised programs viz. B.Sc. in Gography and B.A. (G) Geography.
The department of Geography was started in June, 1955 with the efforts of then Principal Lala Suraj Bhan Ji. Prof. I.N.Chawala was the founder Head of the department and was ably assisted by Prof. K.L.Gauri. Both of them served this institution for a short period.
In Jan. 1959, Prof. R.K.Wahi took over the charge as Head of department and served for about three decades. Prof. S.K.Dosaj and. Prof. A..K. Trivedi assisted him.
Prof. S.K. Dosaj took over as Head of the department in August 1988. During his tenure as Head, he archived a mile stone by started Hon ours in Geog. This degree is helping our students to get admission in Post Graduate classes.
In Nov. 1991, Prof. A.K. Trivedi took the charge as Head of the department at a very young age and started guiding the activities of the department with his academic approach. He not only maintained the high standards in academic but a1so started co-curricular activities like quiz contest, paper reading contest and educational tours act. The strength of student’s Continues to rise under his stewardship. In 2005-06 a new co-educational course B.Sc. (Geog.)/ B.Sc. (Earth Science) was introduced.
During 2008-07 the responsibility of teaching Environment Science in 10+1 & 10+2 classes was given to this department. The Geog. department is very dynamic having a lively ambience. While ensuring innovative education to students interest among students for Geography is also created. Students of this department move to various career oriented paths like teaching research works, Civil services and many more. This year 2006-07 one of our alumnus, Mr. Ravi Bhagat joined as an I.A. S. officer.
Our department organized National Conference in October, 2005. About 150 delegates from different parts of the country participated in it. At present there are seven teaching and non--teaching staff members in the department. The three senior teachers are engaged in research work also. Prof. A.K.Trivedi has been assigned a minor research project by U.G.C.
The department is equipped with latest teaching aids like computers with internet facility, over head projectors etc. The department has applied for Post Graduate in Geog. from the current session 2007.08. It would promote Geog. as discipline and attract students from all corners.
Members of academic staff in the Department are involved in research across a spectrum of subjects that reflect the breadth and topicality of the discipline, and make use of a range of field, laboratory and library based methodologies and techniques.
